the day has finally arrived
I can’t believe it’s here. I’m leaving this afternoon for the longest trip of my life. When will I return? I’m not really sure…
A few things I am giving up when I move to Australia that I am sad about :
long conversations in the middle of the day with my favorite people
My snowboard
My orange kitchen appliances and fantastic collection of coffee mugs...
true story
me: hi, I'd like to cancel my phone service
t-mobile cust service rep: we're sorry to hear that, how come?
me: well I'm moving out of the country
t-mobile cust service rep: ok is there anyone you know who you would like to take over your service for you while you're gone?
me: no, not really
t-mobile cust service rep: darn, well I wish we would have gotten to you sooner so you could have found somebody to
me: ? ....
t-mobile cust service rep: did you just tell my neighbor to be quiet?
me: huh? no?
t-mobile cust service rep: no... would you like to? she is very loud?
me: wha?
t-mobile cust service rep: are you sure?
me: um...
t-mobile cust service rep: ok, well what day would you like the service turned off?
me: this Friday
t-mobile cust service rep: ok, let me set that up for you
me: also, could you check on international roaming charges for me in Australia? like if I kept my phone on for a few days, how much would it cost?
t-mobile cust service rep: sure
[she goes away for a few min]
t-mobile cust service rep: wait, are you sure that's not in the US?
me: huh?
t-mobile cust service rep: yeah, isn't that down there by Hawaii?
me: are you talking about Alaska?
t-mobile cust service rep: haha oh yeah that's the one, like on the map, the state that's down by Hawaii
me: well, actually it's up by Canada... nevermind
me: so my phone service will be canceled Friday?
t-mobile cust service rep: yeah, yeah, Friday. We'll mail you a bill to your address here in the US.
me: Can you email it to me? I'll be in Australia
t-mobile cust service rep: no, sorry, we really can't do that.
me: (silent cursing) ok thank you
t-mobile cust service rep: ok you enjoy your travels ma'am. and when you get back, please give us a call!
me: sure.
[I hope my phone shuts off on Friday]

tuning out
Sometimes people give me advice and I completely ignore it. Like, I listen and think, “that cannot be a good way to live your life”. I’m all for listening to my elders but I think some of them are wrong.

I leave in less than 48 hours
My stuff doesn’t fit into my suitcases and I miss my friends already. Can’t seem to finish my contract work and my emails to the school keep getting returned. I’m also stressing about where I’m going to live when I arrive. Having a rough day…

I'm missing your wedding and because you're who...
B, I completely understand. I am just so excited for you that you’re getting married and that you are so happy with C. If there was anybody’s wedding that I would come back from the other side of the world for, it would be yours. Please don’t feel bad and I’m glad you scheduled it for a time that would be best for you and your family. I will cry in Australia on the day of...

goodbyes
I do this all of the time. I have lived in three different states in the last 6 years. But every time I leave seems to get harder. The toughest part is leaving behind all of the kids I have been coaching. I figure the people who matter to me the most will stay in touch. My best friends have stuck with me wherever I’ve gone. But I always feel like I’m abandoning those kids. They always...

dad: just put password.

dad: yeah just put it.
[I try this and it does not work]
